A basket ball court in Lumley renovated by the Olympic Solidarity in collaboration with the National Olympic Committee (NOC) and the Basketball Association has officially been open.
The Lumley Community is the first to benefit from such a gesture from the Olympic fraternity in their determination to develop the sport in the country.
Secretary General of the NOC, Joseph Nyande who also doubles as Secretary General of the association said the work done by the NOC is a clear manifestation of their commitment towards the improvement of the sport in the country.
He noted that work on the indoor facilities at Goderich is on and have already completed the football pitch and the work is still in progress to make sure that it is completed in the shortest possible time.
He said: “We are not only focusing on basketball but all the sporting disciplines. This shows that the NOC is not only technically improving the officials of the various disciplines but also providing the facilities for the sporting disciplines to benefit.”
The Players in the community were happy for the court which they believe will help improve their talents and build them up physically.
According to the Development Coordinator, Alhaji Haroun Sesay, who also doubles as the Organizing Secretary of the association, the rehabilitation of the Lumley court is part of Association’s development agenda which started last year. He said the work would be replicated at the Attough Mini Sports Complex in the East End of Freetown, Bo, Kenema and Makeni.
He encouraged players and the community people to make good use of the facility, by ensuring its maintenance.
“The community must be involved in the development of the game and indeed the preservation of the playing court. We hope they will organize tournaments that will keep the players engaged and hold training courses for upcoming players,” Mr. Sesay said.
