Makeni, SIERRA LEONE – After emerging victorious in a tightly contested grand-final against their opponents from Saint Joseph Junior Secondary School for the Hearing Impaired, the players of Redemption Bilingual Academy Junior Secondary School in Magbureh have been bestowed with one-year scholarships each as a reward for claiming the 2023 Bombali District Junior Secondary Schools League title.
The determined boys managed to secure their victory with a single goal in an exhilarating match that witnessed a total of eleven goals. Despite failing to score during the third sudden death period, following a series of 1-1, 4-4, and 0-0 draws both in regular play and post-match penalty shootouts, they showcased an impressive unbeaten run throughout this year’s Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary School Education (MBSSE) annual school leagues tournament, which involved ten Junior Secondary School football teams from Bombali District.
According to Michael Alie Koroma, the head coach, the scholarship rewards for the reigning champions will be effective for players in the current academic year who are studying in Junior Secondary School (JSS), while those in JSS I and II will receive theirs in the following academic year, courtesy of Reverend Samuel Turay of the Redemption Calvary Church. This generous gesture from the church serves as a token of appreciation for the pupils’ outstanding achievement.
Coach Koroma, who also teaches at Redemption Bilingual Academy Junior Secondary School in Rogbureh, emphasized that the reward was announced prior to the grand finals, reflecting the school and church’s commitment to nurturing the personal development of their pupils through the promotion of the psycho-motive domain of education. “The promise of a one-year scholarship for each player in this year’s squad, if they emerged victorious in the JSS school league, served as a great motivation for my players to stay dedicated and prepare diligently to secure this year’s title, as they successfully did on Monday. I would like to express my gratitude to Reverend Turay for his immense display of love and inspiration for our pupils to join the school team and continue embracing their education,” says Coach Koroma.
Speaking on behalf of the players, Emmanuel Kamara, who was recognized as the tournament’s best player, expressed his delight over his team’s triumph, attributing his personal accomplishment to the collective efforts of his teammates. He also extended his gratitude to Reverend Samuel Turay from the Redemption Calvary Church for fulfilling his promise. “This scholarship will serve as a motivation for us to strive for excellence both in our academic pursuits and football careers,” he further remarked.
