Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – In a surprising move, Real Republicans Football Club has announced the departure of former player and coach Kewullay Conteh by mutual consent, after just one season and four games at the helm. Chairman Alhaji Umaru Bah revealed that the decision to part ways with Coach Conteh was not taken lightly, citing recent subpar results and performances that fell short of the club’s expectations.
Chairman Bah acknowledged the difficulty of parting ways with a club legend like Conteh, emphasising the personal relationship he shares with the departing coach. Despite recognising Conteh’s integrity and strong work ethic, the decision to change coaches was deemed necessary given the current circumstances.
In a statement, Chairman Bah assured supporters and fan club members that there is no cause for panic, as change is inherent in football. He stressed that no coach is permanent, expressing confidence in the team’s formidable squad and looking forward to improvements in the technical aspect under new coaching leadership.
Reflecting on the team’s recent struggles, Chairman Bah highlighted the poor performance in the second phase of the 2022/23 season, culminating in two defeats and two draws in the last four games. Real Republicans currently sit at 17th place in the 2023/24 season table, prompting the decision to seek a fresh coaching perspective.
Assistant coach Ibrahim Abrray Bangura will take charge of the team temporarily, with the club actively engaging different coaches for Conteh’s permanent replacement. Chairman Bah confirmed that the successor will be appointed before or after the upcoming match against FC Kallon.
Looking ahead, the Soccer Ambassadors are set to face FC Kallon on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at the Angola playing field. The club remains optimistic about the future and is committed to securing a coach who will guide them to success in the remaining fixtures of the season. BT/1/12/2023
