In spite of repeated condemnations corporal punishment is becoming a common place in schools in Bo and its surroundings much to the detriment of pupils, this complaint came against the backdrop of reported harassment and extortions by a way of soliciting bribes and extra charges in schools.
Explaining their plight to our Bo Correspondent a cross section of pupil’s drawn from various individual schools complained of rampant extortion of monies by teachers with impunity failure for which pupils are faced with flogging and other forms of punishment or some times are sent out of classes.
They also spoke about payment of various school functions with the list knowledge of parents or Community Teachers Association; similar complaints are being made for failure in school subsidies as a result extra fees are being charged for morning and afternoon classes. Education officials contacted on the matter are yet to make their comments. Teachers who begged for anonymity say relevant education authorities are themselves posing related problem and that school admission and teachers recruitment has seemingly become as to who knows you in the system.
