About 80% of residents in the eastern region are now experiencing what most people refer to as news black out from one of the renowned radio station in the region.
The radio station known as Radio Moa FM 105.5 at Mount Kenewa in the Luawa chiefdom in the Kailahun district has gone off air over a week now depriving residents of that area. Radio Moa covers the rest of Kono, Kailahun and Kenema districts. When Awoko paid a visit to five border chiefdoms in Kono district a year ago, Radio Moa was the only local station that covered the areas.
Speaking to Awoko by phone from Kailahun town the station manager of Radio Moa Foday Sajuma confirmed that the station has been off the air for quite a long time because of electricity problem.
He said the station was having two generators, one is 16 KVA which is packed waiting to be repaired. One spare part cost 3.8 million leones.
The other generator he went on is the 6.5 KVA that has also gone off but there is difficulty in repairing it.
He disclosed that the community input for the station was too poor. ‘’I have approached the Kailahun District Council for assistance but they have a long term plan for the station but we in the station need an immediate solution now to its problem’’.
Sajuma further explained that the Moa radio came on air in 2003 under the Talking Drum Studio and became community owned in 2006. He said he has formerly taken the radio station to the community people in all the fourteen (14) chiefdoms in the Kailahun district to take ownership of the station because it is community owned. ‘’some are helping gradually’’ he acknowledged.
He also said he has contacted and even written to the eight (8) Parliamentarians in Kailahun district to come to the aid of the station especially in terms of generator.
The station Manager further revealed that he and his team have also paid a working visit to Kono district authorities about the community support for the radio station, in which they too promised to help.
He appealed to government and well meaning Sierra Leoneans in and out of the country and other organizations to immediately come to the aid of Radio Moa in Kailahun district.
