The Rokel News Association (R.O.N.A) last week awarded a number of institutions that are working to enhance nation building in the country in a ceremony organized during the commemoration of the association’s 5th Anniversary.
The awardees include Awoko Newspaper as the best newspaper, CTN Sports Programme as the best sports programme, Hawa Bockarie as the best female radio presenter, SLBC as the best TV Station, DJ Pineapple of the UN Radio as the best DJ among others.
The ceremony was held at the association’s birthplace; the Government Rokel Secondary School Hall and attended by dignitaries, mostly journalists. It also drew the participation of students who are members of news associations in their schools. The schools include the Saint Edwards’ Secondary School Kingtom, the Government Secondary School Kingtom.
As the event unfolded, participants including the host school displayed their abilities in news reporting skills, news presentation and other requisites that make a good journalist.
The Rokel News Association was established some five years ago by the English Department of the Government Rokel Secondary School out of an acute desire to improve the speaking and writing skills of students. The effort is however yielding a dividend since, from observation, students were able to prove to the audience that they are indeed being trained by the department as potential journalists and public speakers and writers. Participants however sadly stated that they have been single-handedly contributing to whatever was evident during the ceremony, and pleaded to concerned institutions to help in any way to develop their career in journalism and mass communication.
