Just after the Parliamentary bye-elections two weeks ago, Pujehun shall in six weeks time go back to the polls this time for local council bye elections.
The bye- elections will be held on March 14 2009 for Ward 323, Pujehun District in the Soro Gbeima Chiefdom after the death of the SLPP councilor, Alhaji A.B Feika.
Chief Electoral Commissioner, Christiana Thorpe explained to the Press yesterday that the bye- elections came about after the Chief Administrator of Pujehun District Council sent a letter to the Internal Affairs, Local Government and Rural Development Minister and the NEC chairperson reporting the death of the SLPP Councilor on December 18th 2008.
The Chief Electoral Commissioner explained that the bye- elections shall be conducted in accordance with section 10 (1) of the local Government Act of 2004 (Act No.1 of 2004) which states that a vacant seat in local Council (s) be filled by a bye- election conducted by NEC within ninety days.
Already, NEC has released key dates for the bye- elections with January 22- March 13 being the start of voter sensitization unto February 16-21 being nomination period.
Campaigns will start on February 22 and end on March 12 with the announcement of the provisional results on March 17. In another development, NEC also released its 2008 annual report focusing on the 2008 local Government Elections.
