A public toilet is finishing construction on the Taylor Cummings garden situated between the Museum, the Law Courts and State House. This garden with the statute of the renowned Sierra Leonean nationalist is also used to commemorate the annual anniversary of the fallen victims of the two World Wars.
The toilet is being constructed by the Freetown City Council to ease the troubles of people visiting the garden on poppy day and other functions and also for the general public.
Explaining to Awoko the reasons for constructing the toilet on the garden, the Environment Officer of the Council, Sulaiman Kpaka said they were constructing a public toilet on the garden because the garden had been used by people in the past frivolously by urinating everywhere and said that realizing that the garden was among very important buildings like the State House and the Law Courts and the rehabilitated CID, there was the need for a public toilet.
Questioned whether the council took in to consideration the emerging consequence of the toilet on the garden and criticism also from some people, he answered that “It’s unfortunate for some people to be criticizing … but it would have been fine for these people to be present on the remembrance day celebration which is the poppy day to see the number of people for just 30mins that would want to attend to the call of nature. That was what we saw and with the toilet there, properly maintained and the Taylor Cummings garden fenced with the toilet just for those using the garden, I think it will serve the purpose”
The environment officer also did not dispute the fact of the use of the toilet by the public “it will be for the general public because Taylor Cummings garden is not a residential area, anybody that is passing by or relaxes at the garden and wants to respond to the call of nature, instead of doing it on the walls or on the garden, the toilet will be used for that purpose”
He affirmed that the toilet will be maintained but argued that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages as when people were urinating and the stench around that area was nauseating.
Sulaiman Kpaka also mentioned that the council has undertaken the construction of other public toilets within the municipality at approved School, Rokupa and Moa wharf as other sites have been identified while others were on the process of rehabilitation.
The garden is named after one time Mayor of Freetown city council Taylor Cummings and the garden is put aside for the remembrance of the fallen heroes during the World Wars. The garden is also a symbolic land mark.
