The finance officer at the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC), Sam Campbell, over the weekend released the political parties’ expenditures report, placing President Koroma, his vice and party as the highest spenders during the 2007 polls.
The report was received from the political parties in line with the Political Parties Act, obliging parties to present financial reports 60 days after the announcement of elections results.
The financial report sent in by the All People’s Congress (APC) stated that its presidential candidate now Head of State spent eight hundred and fifty million Leones whilst Vice President Samuel Sam Sumana spent four hundred and fifteen million, seven hundred and twenty thousand Leones and the APC generally spent two billion, two hundred and ninety seven million, five hundred and seventy four thousand Leones.
Shocking was that the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) did not send financial reports for its presidential candidate former Vice President Solomon Berewa and his running mate erstwhile foreign affairs minister Momodu Koroma.
The only financial expenditures sent by the SLPP were the ones incurred by them for 30 parliamentary candidates and the party as a whole spent one billion, eight hundred and two million eighty one thousand and four hundred Leones. The APC too did not submit expenditure reports for its 102 parliamentary candidates.
The leader of the People’s Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC), Charles Francis Margai, and his running mate, according to the PPRC spent two hundred and fifteen million, four hundred and fifty Leones and three million, six hundred and sixty six eight thousand, five hundred Leones.
The PMDC party as a whole spent two billion, one hundred and fourteen million and twenty three thousand, fifty five Leones.
The commission though praised the PMDC as the only political party that fully complied with the provisions made in the 1991 constitution and the Political Parties Act.
The Convention People’s Party (CPP) presented an expenditure that its presidential candidate, Andrew Turay, and running mate spent one hundred and ninety four million, three hundred Leones and seventy six million, four hundred Leones respectively.
The party, generally spent six hundred and five million, one hundred and eighty two thousand Leones.
With the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the expenditure presented for its presidential candidate and running mate spent one hundred and twenty million, eight hundred and ten and forty three million, five hundred and fifty Leones respectively.
The party spent one billion, seven hundred and thirty five million and four hundred and nineteen Leones.
The United National People’s Party (UNPP), and the Peace and Liberation Party (PLP) spent seven hundred and fifty six million, five hundred and thirty two thousand seven hundred Leones and thirty two million and ninety one thousand respectively.
