The Political Parties Registration Commission Chairman, Justice Tolla Thompson has condemned the use of private security and Marshals used by political parties.
He made this statement on Tuesday at the Commission’s conference room in a meeting with political party leaders, Chairmen and the Police.
Speaking at the meeting, the Chairman of PPRC Justice Tolla Thompson, encouraged leaders of political party to employ the use of the Police, if they need security, maintaining that the police are the statutory body charged with the responsibility of maintaining law and order. He also said that if anyone wants to have security, it must be properly done in consultation with the police, who are responsible for the protection of citizens.
He also warned that if anything happens they will hold the party responsible.
He also said that NEC and the PPRC should be given the priority and respect they deserve because they are empowered by the state and it has been observed that before elections, different institutions are formed for the election but this is considered not good enough for the country.
He said that these organizations are formed and they are dealing directly with the political parties without reference to the commission which is the statutory body, while the constitution is quite clear about their work.
He went further to say that they will not allow it to happen anymore, so they are asking the leaders of political parties to please take note of this, and when they are contacted by these organizations, they should be in the position to tell them what is right.
Speaking on the incident which took place at Goderich Street between the Presidential convoy and Maada Bio’s convoy, the Commissioner said that party supporters should mind and guard the words they use, as he heard on the radio, someone saying that it was an assassination attempt on the flagbearer of the SLPP. These words can cause trouble in the country.
