Ports Authority Football Club, the champions in last year’s premier league season sponsored by Africell, received their long awaited trophy at the Mamba Point at Wilberforce, in Freetown.
The Commercial Manager of Africell Joe Amara Bangali, in his statement to sports personalities noted that “Africell is commitment to the development and promotion of sports in Sierra Leone.”
“Football is a sporting discipline recognized worldwide; cutting across barriers and national borders,” he averred.
He explained that the simple rule of the game makes it easy for all and sundry to follow it with passion.
“This passion has propelled the sport as the most exciting game in the world bringing in considerable rewards for the players,” he said.
Due to its worldwide appeal, Joe said, “football is not merely a simple sport but it is also a sport whereby worldwide recognition can be obtained if a country is successful at international competitions.”
“It is due to recognition of this fact that Africell decided years ago to contribute to the development of football in Sierra Leone and that the National team should be provided with every opportunity to take part in international competitions”, he said.
He mentioned that they recognize the need to support players back home to provide support in creating an arena whereby they could develop and display their skills on a constant basis throughout the year.
Hence they have taken the decision to exclusively sponsor the premier league for 2007/2008 football season, he intimated.
The Commercial Manager also disclosed that due to the success of the premier league, they would take this opportunity to present a cheque of forty-two million five hundred thousand leones (Le 42,500,000) to the Sierra Leone Football Association as the second final payment of the company’s contribution for the 2007/2008 Africell Premier League season
They also extended their full support to the National Team, Leone Stars in their World Cup qualifying match against Nigeria tomorrow.
Other members of the football family also made statements during the program.
