Poro men in Mongere, Bo district are searching for James Garrick, son of a political activist Francis Garrick. James 28 and his father were staying in Mongere were he was a political activist and the district chairman for an opposition political party, the Peace and Liberation Party (PLP). It became apparent that James father hard broken all taboos firstly by belonging to another political rather than the dominant party known in that district, the Sierra Leone People Party (SLPP).
The father was also seen as a campaigner against some of the traditional practices which he considered as barbaric. One of which is the poro society for men which he barred all his sons from joining.
The poro society is one custom and tradition which is taken in high esteem for which the youths must join to be considered as part of them.
The Garrick family was considered by the Mongere people as an out cast not fit to be part of them. In that case, they were excluded and not allowed to take part in any community work. They were banned from using the stream, farm and market.
At the just concluded elections, since James father belonged to another party, his family was intimidated; their houses vandalized and were force to flee the village. During the intimidation James younger brother Alex Garrick was killed and the entire family completely dispersed up to this date.
Friends and sympathizers of James have said they do not know the whereabouts of them and a close individual to them who preferred anonymity cautioned that where ever James was, he should not resurface as the haunt for him particularly intensifies by day.
