The inter secondary school sports has again ended in a tragedy with 9 casualties and three of them having to pass the night in the intensive care unit of the Connaught hospital under observation.
The sports meeting which drew a record crowd had ended with the ahmadiyya scholl winning the championship.
However tragedy struck when after the end of the meet pupils and students alike were moving out of the stadium when suddenly the shots of tear gas by police personnel rang out. This immediately created a panic as pupils and students rushed for the available exits. The main gate leading to Syke street was the scene of mayhem as the crowd attempted to surge through the single gate that was open bodies became clogged up no one could move.
Several students were seen struggling on the ground as the crowd behind pressed forward to try to escape the suffocating fumes of the police tear gas which had been fired right behind them in the stadium.
As the victims – mainly defenceless students – were eventually drawn out from under the stampeding crowd the blame was heaped on the police who fired the tear gas which led to the stampede. As at press time no reason could be given for the firing of the tear gas and the angry students were seen publicly blaming the Police for the mayhem. Video pictures aired by ABC television showed that the crowd was moving out peacefully when the shots rang out behind them.
The question now remains who ordered the firing and why?
