The National Organizing Secretary for the People’s Movement for Democratic Change (pmdc), Tommy Kargbo has over the weekend led a team of party officials to Kono, in order to ascertain the political strength of the party on the ground.
Speaking to members at the party office on Main Kainkordu Road in Koidu City, Mr. Kargbo said a lot of negative things have been said about the party in Freetown, of which Kono was the centre of attention. He said rumors have been flying all over the place that the membership in Kono had pledged their loyalty to one of the parties but that the high turn out of members, all in their party color, has given him the hope that the party is alive and kicking in the district.
The Secretary said instead of PMDC members defecting to other parties, rather it is members of the ruling APC that are demanding for membership from the PMDC. Mr. Kargbo said quite recently a group of Kono youth residing at Portee in Freetown, had switched their membership to the PMDC and that he had seen this as an opportunity to bring those new converts to Kono for thorough identification.
He highlighted some of the successes the party has registered in Kambia and Koinadugu districts where some of the members of the ruling party have been so instrumental during their stay and had promised to give them their support.
The Secretary urged members to go out in their numbers and register as that would determine the party’s success in the forthcoming elections. He said he would be visiting other towns in the district to alert members about the party’s new campaign strategy.
The District Chairman, Abiatama Kainessie applauded the effort of the Organizing Secretary for bringing his brothers home. He said it is now the turn of the Kono executives to rally round disgruntled members in the district so as to bring them back to the party. Mr. Kainessie reassured members that the membership of the ruling party since the last elections in Kono has dropped considerably and that the next elections in November will surely prove it.
In his contribution, Felix Dauda Fofoh said it’s high time for the PMDC to start working on the lapses of the APC before they start playing smart.
