Though the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) is playing host to the Libyan head of state, Muammar Al-Qathafi, the entire membership of the People’s Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC) is raising concerns over the visit.
The PMDC maintains that the visit of the Libyan leader is a painful irony of the present government as it was this same man who was responsible for the training, financing and arming of the defunct Revolutionary United Front (RUF) to destabilize Sierra Leone.
In a press release the PMDC further states that, ”it is not important that Gadaffi owes Sierra Leoneans a huge apology and war reparations, as long as he provides some buses during an election period and generously finances the SLPP’s election campaign [it’s OK with the SLPP].”
It continues that, “for the SLPP they now see Gadaffi as an idol and are prepared to spread a red carpet for him.[But] we should be critical of the SLPP’s gimmicks and not to fall for them.
Although we have been forced to be poor by our leaders, we still remain a proud nation and should not allow any government to sell us cheaply to an individual who contributed immensely to the misery of our recent past.”
