Mohamed Pa Momoh Fofanah, the chief legal adviser of the People’s Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC), has strongly denounced a recent statement made by the Inspector General (IG) of Police, Brima Acha Kamara, and described him as “the newly appointed propaganda secretary of the SLPP.”
Addressing the media at their party’s office yesterday in Freetown, Pa Momoh explained that their party had been making several complaints to the police but no action had been taken.
He said after the incident in Kailahun, when a fracas ensured between the PMDC and SLPP, the IG said the matter was serious and that even if it occurred it might have been caused by the PMDC.
He elucidated that since the Local Unit Commander (LUC) in Kailahun could not control the situation instead condoled the SLPP, he then reported the matter to the UN Special Representative Victor Angelo who single handedly tried to put the situation under control by deploying three European Union observers at the scene. Pa Momoh officially disclosed that violence had been perpetrated against their female parliamentarians by the SLPP in various parts of the country. He also highlighted some of the complaints filed to the police by their party.
Another party legal adviser, Robert Kowa, said “the IG is being paid from the consolidated fund and so he has the task to protect the lives and property of the people of this country not only few people as he is doing now”.
He disclosed that, “on no account did the new spokesman of the SLPP Victor Raider sent a letter to our leader to give him a security. If there is any document to the effect let him produce it and the response from our leader.”
Mr Kowa added that since their party was law abiding they had made several complaints to the police but that no action had been taken.
“So how can we trust the IG to give our leader security in a genuine manner,” he intoned.
“Our supporters are being constantly attacked by SLPP thugs and we are showing restraints because we are law abiding,” he stated.
The chairman for the Western Area campaign team, Emmanuel O. Grant, said the reason for the press conference was because of “the uselessness of the SLPP leader and his supporters.”
He added that they believed in the rule of law and so they wanted other parties to emulate their attitude “but the SLPP has resorted to crude tactics in their campaign.”
