Plan Sierra Leone Moyamba Programme Unit, in collaboration with the Moyamba Inspectorate Office, has organised a three-day workshop for School Management Committees (SMC).
Participants were drawn from 35 primary schools in the district.
The aim of the workshop was to ensure and enhance governance. Issues discussed included financial management, community support to schools and monitoring of schools’ activities.
In an exclusive interview with the Plan unit manager, Taplima Muana, he stated that Plan was the service provider and the workshop was supported by the SABABU Education project.
He disclosed that, “Plan is also engaged in Child Health and Development which is funded by European Commission”, adding that this intervention was geared towards eradicating hunger and poverty, reducing child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.  He emphasized that Plan would review the training of MCH Aide and construct a special training centre outside the hospital, which would be provided with a library facility, practical room, lecture room and office spaces for the District Medical Officer, District Health Sister and Training Coordinator. The deputy director of Education, John S.L. Moody, described the workshop as very timely as it was meant to sensitize the community people about the importance of sending their children to school, especially girls.  He said the SMC should play a leading role in raising awareness within their communities. John Moody said the workshop also looked at the procedures to be followed before a school would be established within their communities.
