Plan Sierra Leone has organised a community led Total Sanitation programme for three communities in Kailahun district eastern Sierra Leone.
The Programme manager Dauda Kanu told the press that the initiative is aimed at eradicating the problem of open defecation in the entire district. Mr. Kanu thanked the communities of Gaora, Gambu and Belebu for their effort in making the programme a success. Kanu called on other communities in the area to imitate the good example and implement it to make their environment open defecation free.
Kanu disclosed that fifteen pit latrines have been commissioned in the three communities in the district.
Since they started their operations in Kailahun district four years ago Plan Sierra Leone has successfully implemented projects like in-service-training for teachers of sporting schools, provision of latrine materials, the building of Home Economic centres and a Regional Library.
In response the people of Luawa chiefdom in the Kailahun district have requested Plan Sierra Leone to assist them with the construction of a court barri and water facilities in the chiefdom.
