Salamatu Bangura who is the Mamie Queen of the Gullah Kinship Association during their peaceful protest at State House disclosed to Awoko that the purpose of their visit to President Ernest Bai Koroma is to complain certain government officials.
The Mamie Queen said that they are going to make a complaint to the President against Zainab Bangura Minister of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador to America Bockarie Stevens “for sabotaging the development of this nation. These people were working with us but later they decided to stay back. Later our Chief Pa Komrabi Dumbuya called them to solve the difference between us but they refused.”
She alleged that “the two people prevented about 1.8 million bags of rice and other items to come to the country because they are selfish people working for themselves and not for the nation. We have been told by the President that there are no sacred cows in his government and we are trying to prove that he has them.”
She alleged further “they are communicating with people in America especially with Joe Opala and Heritage, and Heritage and Kingship are not the same so they are fighting to get us down. When our Chief was going to America the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote a letter stating that he is not a crowned Chief and he is not recognized by the 15 man tribal heads who crowned him. We have all the evidence against these people that is why we are here to make a complaint to the President.”
Speaking about the Gullah Kinship, Salamatu Bangura said that in September 2010 they visited the President and they handed him the key to the City Union “and during this visit, President Koroma promised to give them his full support and that any individual that wants to destroy us we should make a complaint to him.”
On the 14th of June she went on they made a complaint to President Koroma “he instructed the Mayor to ask us to go home as they were arranging for the funeral of a strong party member and that we should come after seven days and so it has passed seven days even months has passed that is why we are here. We are not here for violence or to do anything that will cause harm to the state, we are here just as reminder of the complaints we made as we believe that there is no complaint that will take six weeks to receive attention.”
Ms Bangura further disclosed to Awoko that early this year they had visitors from America and they informed both the Mayor and the President about the intended visit and they promised to meet both the President and the Mayor. The delegation was to spend only nine days but they ended staying for three months because the President did not meet them as promised without any excuse “people this was a big slap to the country.” “Our chief went to America to open the door for us but they have not recognized that.” She also stated that is why the government refused to meet with the visitors.
She went on “our organization is for the development of the country not only for its members because we are non political, tribal and religious. We support ourselves financially we decided to do this to show that we have the biggest organization and we don’t want people to feel left out when decisions are reached at by few people. If the President listens to our cry we will go home quietly and we don’t intend to cause any problem.”
