The Paramount Chief of Nongowa chiefdom in the Kenema district PC Alhaji Amara Bonya Vangahun who is also the chairman councils of Paramount Chiefs Kenema district has called on the government to improve on its mode of transmitting information to grassroots communities all over the country. Chief Amara Bonya Vangahun made this appeal while speaking during a consultative meeting held for stakeholders in Kenema district organized by Consultants of the National Communication Strategy at the Kenema District Council along Maxwell Khobe Street in Kenema.
PC Vangahun disclosed that in the past the government information service was helping greatly in information dissemination, as messages could be easily transmitted from government to its citizenry across the country. He said the provincial office was also vital in ensuring that local authorities are well informed about government policies and developmental plans for the country.
Adding that chiefs were informed by the provincial secretary of government plans and activities even before the war but this method has been completely wiped off. PC Vangahun further noted that chiefdom police personnel whom they use to send from one village to another to communicate massages are no longer working because government is yet to address their welfare concerns.
Chief Vangahun is therefore urging the government to reactive the government information service and to capacitate the office of the Provincial officer so that the residents can be adequately informed about happenings in the country and beyond.
In his statement the former Consultant of the National Communication Strategy Kalilu Totangay said the reason for organizing the meeting was to get first hand information from various stakeholders in the country in order to have an effective national communication strategy document.
According to Totangay the document will serve as a guide through whom information can be disseminated from the central government to other sectors and communities.
He emphasised the importance for people to know the activities of government especially those on policy matters.
