Parliament last Thursday ratified $700,000 agricultural grant from the Islamic Development Bank.
The grant agreement is between the Government of Sierra Leone and the Islamic Development Bank concerning the support for the National Agricultural Programme to mitigate increasing food crisis under the Jeddah declaration signed 10th June, 2009.
Parliament also ratified the protocol agreement between the Sierra Leone government and the African Development Fund on behalf of the fragile states facility (Economic Governance Reform Programme 1) signed on May 14th 2009.
Debating the ratification, Hon. Eric Jumu of SLPP said the grants should not be misused as it is meant for the benefit of the country. Hon. Phillip Tondoneh said more monitoring should be put in place but asked why the grants was only marked for Tonkololi district leaving the other impoverished districts.
The deputy Finance Minister, Dr. Richard Conteh who moved the Government motion replied that the $700,000 was not the only money received for agricultural purposes as the Government has received over $100 m.
Also, the Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs Dr. Soccoh laid on the table the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Chairman, Committee on Presidential Affairs and Defence, Hon. Abdul R. Kamara (Capt Rtd) also laid the report of their visit to various military barracks/emplacements.
