The Third parliament of the Second Republic of Sierra Leone has endorsed 29 parliamentary over sight committees involving members of parliaments.
This is in preparation for the announcement and vetting of ministers for the first cabinet under President Ernest Bai Koroma.
This will be the third major function of the new parliament after electing both the speaker and deputy speaker of parliament and setting up of the 29 committees among which is the all important Committee on appointments and the public service.
The much anticipated committee, the parliamentary committee on appointment and public service, which is responsible to interview proposed ministers and other government officials was yesterday endorsed with the majority leader Hon Edward Turay of APC chairing it.
The majority leader also heads the business committee and supervisory committee whilst Hon. Kemoh Sesay of APC heads the committee on Energy and Power.
The committee on Health and Sanitation is headed by Hon Bintu Myers of the minority SLPP.
The APC Hon Moses Sesay heads the Finance Committee, whilst Mani Betts Pridy also of the APC heads the Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Committee.
The one time SLPP MP for Kono who cross carpeted to the APC, Hon Augustine Torto heads the committee on Mineral Resources, and Hon Alie S. Sankoh and Hon S.B.B Dumbuya heads the committees on Education, Works and Housing respectively.
The new political party in parliament The Peoples Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC) also has members heading committees .One of them Hon Legacy K. Sankoh heads the committee on the National Commission for Social Action (NACSA) whilst Hon Alimamy P. Koroma of APC, Hon Tamba E.Kaibanje of SLPP, Hon Elizabeth Alpha Lavalie of SLPP heading the committees on Economic Development, Youths and Sports and Human Rights respectively.
For the committee on Social Services and Labour, Marine Resources, Information and Broadcasting, Transport and Communication and the committee on Transparency are headed by Hon Rev Mary Yansaneh of APC, Hon Minkailu Mansaray of APC, Hon Veronica Sesay, Hon Ibrahim Bundu and Hon PC Jeremiah Sina 11 respectively.
These oversight committees have been charged with the responsibility by parliament to serve as a check on the various ministries, departments and commissions with their findings subjected to approval by parliament
The Speaker of Parliament Hon Justice Abel Stronge congratulated the MPs on their various appointments urging them to always make themselves available whenever the committees meet.
