Parliament has approved four nominees presented for the position of Board Members for the newly established Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation.
The Board Members presented before Parliament included Lawyer Easmon Ngakwie from the Sierra Leone Bar Association; Mr. Morlai Conteh, a professional Journalist and a prime executive in the youth forum in the country, was alongside approved by members with two others: Rev. Agnes Veronica Koroma; representing the women’s’ Forum and PC Alimamy Koroma from the Tonkolili District.
The four nominees were approved amidst commendable acclamations from both sides of the House in respect of their good work and commitment to enhance nation building.
In an effort to foster capacity building in the media, Hon. Frank Kpossowa a Journalist and a representative of the SLPP expressed concern over the appalling condition under which journalists are serving, and that most Media Houses do not have adequate human resource to cater for their reporters.
The issue of bad journalism according to Hon. Bai Kurr Kanagbaro Sanka III representing Paramount Chiefs in the Tonkolili District emanates from poor remuneration provided for journalists in the country. He recommended that motivation should be provided to bolster the effort of journalists.
Few Members of the Legislature however expressed resentment over the manner in which the area of professionalism is mishandled even when the SLBS has been rebranded.
This was clearly pointed out in the statement of Hon. Ndafe Benya of the Small Bo Chiefdom Kenema District. He categorically expressed regrets on how news readers and reporters pronounce typical Sierra Leonean names, further stating that no changes from his own perspective has been achieved ever since SLBS changed its name. Hon. PC Benya stated emphatically that “the same old system still exists, nothing has changed” Devoid of the underlining criticisms, no questions were raised on the eligibility of the nominees and they were warmly approved by the Speaker of the House Justice Abel Stronge.
