Parliament has unanimously approved its former Speaker Justice Edmond Cowan as the new Ombudsman.
After the proposal was made for the approval by the Chairman of the Appointments committee, Members of Parliament who joined the debate for approval gave overwhelming support to Justice Edmund Cowan.
Honorable Momoh Pujeh the Minority Leader of the Sierra Leone People’s Party was full of praises for Justice Cowan. He defined him as a breed of SLPP, pointing out that they as a party produced the best Speaker of Parliament who handled the affairs of Parliament efficiently and effectively. He said that he has no doubt that Justice Cowan will perform well in his new capacity.
Honorable Sheku B.B Dumbuya representing the All People’s Congress said Justice Cowan is “The right man in the Right Place” He said that this time around people will see justice because Justice Cowan is a man of integrity and had excelled himself in parliament.
The Speaker of Parliament Justice Abel Stronge congratulated Justice Cowan and wished him well in his new assignment.
Mrs Marie Bob Kandeh was also approved for member in the Anti corruption Advisory Committee and Mr Abu Bangura was approved for the National Commission for privatization.
Meanwhile Parliament ratified several loans and grant agreements which were laid on the table of the House on Tuesday 5th February 2008. These included the loan Agreement between the OPEC fund for International Development and the government of Sierra Leone for the Kenema Pendembu Road Project, the grant financing Agreement (rural and Private Sector) Development project between the government of the republic of Sierra Leone and the International Development Association and the loan Agreement between the government of Sierra Leone and the Kuwait fund for Arab Economic Development for the Kenema-Pedembu Road project of the Kenema-Koindu corridor.
