The Paramount Chief Member of Parliament representing Moyamba District, Hon. PC Joseph Alie Kongova has urged his colleagues to dissociate from partisan politics in their constitutional roles in the House of Parliament. During his contribution yesterday on the Presidential Address which is being debated in Parliament, the Hon. PC cited their presence in the House, under section 74 (1), and said that they are recognized as the oldest in the house, and therefore their contributions are important to the development of the people and the country, devoid of partisan politics. He further noted that they as PC MPs should also not be forgetful of their primary role as custodians of the culture and tradition. They should therefore maintain unity and development in their respective chiefdoms. He also said they should work with all political factions to achieve what the people expect of them. As a matter of fact, he went on, the two parties represented in the House of Parliament, the APC and the SLPP could be likened to a situation of a mother and son; both are divided based on different agenda in terms of governance and politicking. However, Hon. P.C Kongova reiterated, the two parties have different political allegiance amongst the populace, for which reason, they as Paramount Chief representatives should stay neutral in a bid to maintain the confidence among their subjects. Specifically, he pressed further, his district, the Moyamba, has 14 chiefdoms, with 222,000 people represented by 14 Paramount chiefs and 6 ordinary Members of Parliament; among whom, he stated, one is in the ruling party and five are in the opposition party. Therefore, he viewed, the progress of the district depends on all of them, irrespective of their political differences. He said that they as Paramount Chief MPs should work with open minds to ensure development and human rights in their various domains. By Poindexter Sama
