The National Electoral Commissioner, Dr Christiana Thorpe yesterday announced the certified election results of the Paramount Chiefs election for the remaining12 seats in parliament.
Done through the electoral college of chiefdom councilors the 12 Paramount Chiefs each represent one of the 12 provincial districts.
The NEC Chairperson said that following the nomination process for the paramount chief elections for parliament held between July 30 to August 2, 18 candidates emerged but a total of 3 candidates withdrew their nominations in writing (1 from Kenema district and 2 from Bombali district) so 11 districts save Tonkolili, the 12th district had only one candidate standing for the Parliamentary seats.
“In such cases if only one candidate is nominated after the close of nominations or if a candidate withdraws his/her nomination, resulting in only 1 candidate being nominated, then no election shall be held and the single nominated candidate shall be declared duly elected” Dr Thorpe explained.
She pointed out that it was against that backdrop that the paramount chief members of parliament elections were conducted only in Tonkolili on 1st September where PC Bai Kurr Kanagbaro Sanka III from Kunike Chiefdom won the Parliamentary seat beating three other contestants.
The NEC Chairperson also announced that 11 other Paramount Chiefs having been the only nominated candidates for the Parliamentary seat in their respective districts are duly elected as Paramount Chief Members of Parliament.
