The Palestinian International Cooperation Agency (PICA) medical team has concluded an assessment and performed surgeries on hundreds and given lectures to many health practitioners at Connaught Hospital, UMC Eye Hospital and the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH). The Office of the First Lady and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs facilitated their visit. The team of doctors were assigned by the Palestinian President directly through PICA with the focus to strength ties of cooperation through exchange of experience and knowledge, engage on consultations, training of trainers and trainees, and to study, analyze and assess the situation. The Director General and team leader for PICA in the Palestinian Embassy, Imad Zuhairi, assured that they will continue working with Sierra Leone and all what they will be doing will reflect both country’s interests especially in promoting the bilateral relationship. Zuhairi said their group is involved in intervention areas including medical, agriculture, energy and other investment areas. The Director General said they will work with the Ministry of Health to ensure patients are screened and analyzed in such a way that before their arrival they will be prepare the number of cases to be treated during their stay.

Zuhairi said prior to their visit, they held meetings with the Islamic Development Bank on agriculture and energy sectors. He said after their assessment, the team members will write reports on their various findings for onward presentation, which will be developed into a single report and its outcome will be communicated to the government for approval of their implementation. The Family Medicine Doctor and Epidemiologist on the team, Neveen Shalfa, said they have definite guidelines and approaches to each case. They have been treating cases not as complaints and treatments but one that they deal with in a holistic manner. She said they are in touch with medical practitioners here. The Palestinian Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Thaer Abu Baker, said the team has concluded their exploration mission to assess possible areas of Palestine intervention. Their findings will be reviewed and put together for actions by the two countries.
