Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – In a ground breaking development within the realm of poultry farming, Awoko recently conducted an exclusive visit to Africa Mande Union (AMU), a local poultry farm in Waterloo, Newton. The visit unveiled a remarkable fusion of nutrients transforming layer feed, with a key ingredient being crushed oyster shells.
During the tour, Foday Mansaray, a representative of AMU, shared insights with Awoko, highlighting the unique composition of their feed. This distinctive blend incorporates maize, PKC (Palm kernel chaff), Concentrate, and the innovative addition of crushed oyster shells.
Mansaray elaborated on the farm’s nutritional strategy, revealing that the incorporation of oyster shells, traditionally considered waste, into the feed mix holds the promise of cultivating healthier and more productive layers. This sustainable approach not only maximizes resource utilization but also introduces a calcium-rich element, significantly contributing to the development of sturdy eggshells and overall bird well-being.
The transition from traditional limestone to a blend of ranger palette and imported food is a noteworthy aspect of AMU’s feed evolution. Mansaray highlighted that this transition ensures a comprehensive and cost-effective diet for their layers. Notably, he observed that layers exhibited heightened appetites and produced larger eggs when fed this customized blend, in contrast to a diet solely reliant on imported food.
Emphasizing the pivotal role of Concentrate in boosting appetite and enhancing egg size, Mansaray stated, “This tailored approach is specific to layers, with a distinct diet maintained for day-old chicks until they reach the egg-laying stage.”
The feeding schedule, conducted twice a day—morning and late afternoon—is a crucial element in providing the necessary nutrients for optimal health and egg production, according to Mansaray. He expressed the farm’s commitment to exploring and sharing transformative agricultural practices, aiming to redefine traditional methods and contribute to sustainable and efficient poultry management in the country. AMU’s innovative nutritional strategy serves as a beacon for the poultry industry, offering a glimpse into the possibilities of revolutionizing feed for enhanced productivity and bird well-being.
