The heart land of the All Peoples Congress (APC), Brookfields in the Western area of Freetown is in complete disarray over symbols given to candidates to contest the up coming local council elections.
On Thursday night after the names of candidates were announced over the ‘We Yone’ Radio, supporters of APC in Constituency 109 ward 387 and Constituency 110 ward 388 were surprised to hear that the candidates they recommended were not given the party symbols. Speaking under condition of anonymity one of the party’s strongest supporter, said that he was shocked and disappointed by what he heard over the radio, stating “that was not the type of APC we voted for.”
“We at the grassroots feel the pinch of anything that goes wrong in our communities” said the supporter, adding “we voted for change but we are not feeling the change.”
The visibly disturbed man lamented “our choice should be given to us not what those in the high hierarchy dictates to us or impose any person that the people of the community do not approve of.”
He maintained that since they have imposed candidates that are “not our choices on us we know what to do when the time for campaign and voting comes.”
The supporter noted that gone are the days when they will sit and see things go wrong without them correcting it at an early stage, questioning “will our vote be counted during the elections?”
The APC supporter pointed out that Brookfields community has been giving the strongest support to the APC but it seems as if they want the community to fall apart. Most of the youths in Brookfields have vowed not to vote or take part in the elections because of what they referred to as ‘betrayal of their trust’
