The African continent has registered 888,272 recoveries of coronavirus representing 6 percent of the global recoveries or 14,762,396 cases. The continent has registered 1,167,848 cumulative confirmed cases and 27,322 deaths. Despite the low percentage of confirmed cases recorded on the continent as compared to the global cases, Sierra Leone has recorded cumulative confirmed recoveries of 1,542 cases representing 0.2 percent of the continent’s cumulative total. Liberia in the same Mano River Union basin has recorded 803 recoveries while Guinea has registered 7,648 representing 0.1 and 0.9 percent respectively.

Sierra Leone from 31st March 2020 to date has registered a cumulative confirmed caseload of 1,972 representing 0.2 percent of the continent’s total confirmed cases, while Liberia’s cumulative total accounts for 0.1 percent or 1,285 cases and Guinea’s confirmed cases is at 8,932 cases representing 0.8 percent. The death toll for Sierra Leone for the past week has remained 69.

Despite the slow pace of daily recorded cases as compared to neighbouring countries including Liberia that has registered 82 deaths – which is more than what has been registered in Sierra Leone – Guinea is the least in the MRU in terms of reported death cases, with 53 persons representing 0.2 percent. However, the national COVID-19 updates for Saturday 22nd August 2020 indicated 8 new active cases accounting for one from Western Area Urban District, one from Western Area Rural District, four from Moyamba District, and one from Pujehun District, all in the Southern Region, and one from Kailahun District in the Eastern Region with three more recoveries.

There are 71 people in government managed quarantines in three districts including Pujehun, Kailahun and Kenema. Kailahun District has 15 people in organisation managed quarantines. There are 551 persons in quarantine of which Kailahun District accounts for 148 persons followed by Western Area Urban with 123 persons.
