Over 80% government workers declare assets
On Wednesday, 03 June 2020 Francis Ben Kaifala, Commissioner of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has said 80-90 percent of government workers in Sierra Leone have declared their assets to the commission. This was after the commission extended the asset declaration deadline to the end of last month. “I cannot tell you the actual percentage because we are still putting the data together, but 80 to 90 percent have summited,” Kaifala sounded in a telephone interview. He furthered that there was a mad rush during the last days for the submission, and forms they printed were finished at some point and other printing was done. He confirmed there are still people who have not submitted based on excuses, others are still waiting to confirm some details and there are some who are out of the country. Kaifala said the deadline has passed so he has all rights to use the law against people who have not submitted but if there are good reasons for not submitting he also has the power to extend the date for them. Sierra Leone’s Anti-Corruption Act provides, “every public officer shall, within three months of becoming a public officer, deposit with the Commission a declaration of his income, assets and liabilities and thereafter in every two years that he is a public officer, but not later than 31st March of that second year, deposit further declaration of his income, assets and liabilities and also while leaving office.”
