The Member of Parliament representing Constituency 131 Western Urban, Honorable Mohamed Sheriff Rahman Coker on Monday 10th August 2020 presented examination materials to over 750 pupils preparing for public examinations. According to the Member of Parliament, the beneficiaries include 385 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) pupils and 367 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) pupils within his Constituency.
He disclosed that with the current economic situation across the country and the world at large, it is very timely for such donation to be made as not every parent can afford to buy or provide their children with the examination materials. “This is also a way of complimenting President Bio’s free quality education drive,” he said, explaining that the free quality education will not provide everything for the children at the same time which is why he thought it fit to support pupils within his constituency.
Hon Coker maintained that those that will be writing their BECE exams will receive a full mathematical set whiles those writing the WASSCE will receive the mathematical set with a calculator to enable them fully participate in their exams. Explaining about the selection process of the beneficiaries, he disclosed that it was done through registration by the Aberdeen Student Union and through communication that was done using the loud speakers inviting pupils to go and register.
He disclosed that in the other communities they contacted the various stakeholders, who conducted the registration process to ensure that everyone writing either of the exams benefit from the package. According to him, they are currently registering pupils that missed out on the first process to be included in the second phase that will be conducted shortly, disclosing that the entire package cost almost Le 20m (twenty million Leones), which according to him is part of his salary. According to Kaday A Kamara a WASSCE pupil at the Government Technical Secondary School, it’s a blessing in disguise for them to receive the examination materials at this trying time, disclosing that they are well prepared for their exams but are not too equipped with their materials.
James Monrovia another WASSCE pupil at the West African Collegiate School, said they are presently in camp studying hard for the exams as there is no teaching in the schools. He expressed appreciation to the Honourable for his timely intervention in providing them with examination materials. Marian Cole a BECE pupil at the Sierra International Academy said she had been studying very hard to face the BECE examination, explaining that the package she received from the Member of Parliament is a morale booster for her towards the exams.
She called on the Honourable to continue supporting pupils that are in examination classes especially at this trying time when parents are finding it very difficult to provide for their homes. AMK/11/08/2020
