The outgoing Director of Sports, Saidu Mansaray said his role as Director was on policy matters and that the sports council was not functioning as sports council but as a division in the ministry of youths and sports over the past 20 years.
The outgoing Director of Sports also mentioned that at the time the sport council was functioning, it was in control of the Director of Sports but since it stopped that control was no more in the hands of the Director.
He went further that his role was to provide technical and financial support to the association and as Director of sports he had no authority over the associations because of the autonomy statute. Thus he stated further that he played his own part but regretted that despite the proposals for the establishment of the sports council, it has not yet been formed.
The outgoing Director also said he tried to pursue the formulation of the national sports policy but that also did not materialize. He noted that his saddest moment as Director of sports was when sports deteriorated generally because of the lack of control and that the stakeholders have still not assumed that responsibility for the development of sports and a national sport policy.
The outgoing director Saidu Mansaray said he has worked as Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Football Association for 12-13 years and he was also deputy Stadium Manager from 1993-1996.
He served as assistant director of sports and after the death of M L Dumbuya about five years ago he took over from him.
