Operation Classroom has donated one hundred cartoons of books to the Freetown City Council. The donation ceremony took place at the City Council Grounds on Wednesday 9th September, 2009.
Making a statement during the donation ceremony, the Country Director, Operation Classroom Smart B. Senesie stated that the Operation Classroom programme in relationship with their outreach activities provide some support to institutions that are in dire need of the services they are committed to delivering.
He added that the donation this time around was granted to FCC for its Municipal schools. The books he said comprised of reading books for pupils in the elementary and secondary schools. He added that the Operation Classroom programme is funded by partners in the United States and their corporate responsibilities are geared towards providing assistance to academic institutions, medical, financial supports and infrastructure.
The chairperson of Operation Classroom Beatrice Fofanah mentioned that to achieve quality education in a country requires partnership and commitment in providing materials that are useful for our learning environments. She added that donations are made out of inspiration and that they are moved by the deplorable state of education in the country. This, she said, gave reason for the donation of books to the Freetown Municipality. She further stated that the books donated could be used by both primary and secondary, and some are even relevant for students in tertiary institutions.
The Acting Chief Administrator of Freetown City Council Arthur Q. John expressed appreciation for the donation to the FCC and referred to it as a step in the right direction in combating illiteracy in the country.
He said that the materials are of immense benefit since they are educational materials, adding that the council will look through the books donated to determine how to distribute them to needy areas.
