One Blood Int’l in massive Rice Cultivation in Bo
A Sierra Leonean Company, One Blood International is currently in a massive mechanized rice cultivation in Blama, Galu Bagbe Chiefdom and Tanina, Taiama, cultivating almost 300 acres of Nerica swamp rice. In a short interview with the Project Officer David B Vamboi, he said the project started some years back as a community based one, but the people in the village refused to take it seriously so it almost collapsed. He said the Director of the project Dr Jackson of Bo City decided to restructure the programme from community based to a commercialized one, which became successful this year as all the workers are now employed and they are paid monthly salaries. Mr. Vamboi said Dr Jackson who had been engaged in such a business in Liberia has returned home to help alleviate poverty by investing millions of Leones so that the communities will benefit, but they disappointed him and he decided to do it alone. At Blama village, the total number of acres cultivated is about 140 and in Tanina, it is little over 100 acres. Speaking to the tractor driver James Harding, he said mechanized farming is easier and faster. He said they have two tractors that are working and he is in charge of the one at Blama and the other is at Tanina where they have been working assiduously to get the rice planted in time. Mr Harding said the Director has plans to increase the cultivation as he is determined to help the country attain Food Security. The other workers at the farm said they are happy to work and get paid as some of them were working very hard while others were not and that was the reason why Dr Jackson changed the programme and all of them who were interested to work and get paid were employed.
