The recent scandals of newspaper hacking by journalists across Britain have revealed that Police everywhere are the same.
The ongoing investigations in to claims that the News Of The World (NOTW) has been hacking in to phones has also revealed that Police officers have also been on the ‘take’ to provide information. Coming from the hitherto very respected British police force whom we out here fell are above such low lying behaviour is a damning revelation.
This points to the fact that perhaps police everywhere are the same. Our Traffic Police officers take bribes and even senior police officers have been known to accept bribes from business men as protection fees. Ofcourse before the advent of the Keith Biddle regime senior police officers were known to walk from shop to shop along Sani Abacha Street collecting little sums of money as gifts. There were those of course who sent their ‘orderlies’ to collect on their behalf.
Sometimes we wonder how the criminals end up getting guns and information on where and when to raid. This our own police internal investigation has revealed that some of our crooked police officers rent guns to criminals to loot.
Ofcourse the British newspapers have carried stories of police officers who have been caught on camera shop lifting; stories have been published of police having affairs with rape victims and all.
The satisfying thought for the British is that they have a system where when these defaulting officers are found out the culprits are subsequently dismissed or further jailed. For us here some of these things are celebrated in the force, and that is the worrying aspect.
We have watched the development of the CDIID and have witnessed a few cases of injustice from the public being addressed. What we believe is needed now is an even more robust internal investigations unit which will dispassionately try to weed the bad apples out. We need a team which will stake and catch those police officers who go out at night arresting prostitutes only to demand sex afterwards for their freedom. We need a team who will stake out and catch those police officers who set up check points at night only to ask for money from motorists and demand money from commercial motorists. We need a team who will stake out and catch those police officers who work with criminals who go out in the street and wrongly accuse innocent people of unbelievable crimes, and get them arrested only for them to pay bribes to be released and the case is over. It is this injustice that led to the rebel war and lest we forget the senseless attack on police men and a record burning of police stations.
Therefore while we watch as Britain begins to monitor even the personal accounts of police officers in a bid to see where extra monies are coming from, the Sierra Leone Police must also begin to take active action to clean it image and do the job they are being paid for.
