Officials in the Ministry of Lands, the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) and eleven (11) International Contractors have made an inspection tour of the Kenema/Kailahun highway. The purpose of the site tour was for the contractors to see for themselves the level of work they are about to bid for.
Addressing the International Contractors at the Sierra Leone Roads Authority Conference Hall along Hangha road in Kenema, the Acting Director-General of SLRA, Munda Rogers said the meeting is geared toward involving the community people from the planning stage right through the implementing stage.
He told the gathering that the first phase of the project would start from Kenema to Pendembu, adding that all transactions, including the award of the contract would end in December this year.
He said that International contractors from Mali, Korea, Kuwait, Senegal, Italy, Libya, Egypt and China have so far consented to bid for the project. He disclosed that the road would be of a higher standard than the Bo/Kenema highway which has lasted over thirty years.
The Minister of Works and Infrastructure, John Saad, pointed out that the Kenema- Kailahun- Koindu roads are the major routes linking countries in the Mano River Union.
He said that the Government is paying more attention to these roads, as the construction of these roads would reduce poverty in the country.
The Minister reintegrated that as a government in power, they would ensure that the contractor who would be awarded performs as expected, in order to reduce maintenance costs in the future. He admonished members of the community to do everything in their might to ensure that the contract is implemented in the right way; and however called on them not to interfere but to report to the Regional Engineer if problems arise.
The Mayor of the Kenema City Council, Brima Kargbo expressed gratitude to Government and the Sierra Leone Roads Authority for considering the Kenema/Kailahun road; and also for involving the community people at the initial stage, which he said is the first of its kind in the award of contracts in this part of the country.
He promised that they would fully cooperate at all levels.
