Being a son of a prominent Sierra Leonean politician, Hassan Gbassay Kanu, who rose to political power in his early 20’s and has held numerous positions in government, including Minister of Mines, Minister of Energy and Power, Minister of Finance and Acting Vice President of this nation, Alhassan Kanu has finally decided to follow the footsteps of his father by going into politics.
Al Kanu as he is popularly known disclosed his intention to vie for the APC symbol to represent constituency 101 in the forth coming parliamentary election at a press briefing held yesterday.
After having held so many top positions throughout his educational life and being blessed with different awards for his commitment and tireless effort in the New York community, and for his leadership quality, he also received the Barrack Obama Award past Friday January 27 this year, to be the first Sierra Leonean youth of his age, 31, to have received such a coveted award.
He maintained that as a son of the said constituency, he wants to share the knowledge and experience he had acquired and implemented abroad as Sierra Leone is his native land. He added that he is well aware of the constraints residents in the constituency are presently undergoing as he had lived there for quite a long time before he left for USA.
“I will not step in my father’s shoes, but I will try to follow the footsteps as I am a man, my own man, with love for my people and country. I will like to join President Koroma in achieving the agenda for change he has started,” he said.
As a supporter and believer in the principles of democracy, Al Kanu stated that he is heartened by the message sent out by President Koroma two weeks ago, when he disclosed that, this time it is the people that will decide who should carry the party symbol, because he knows he is the best among the rest.
He encouraged all to go out and register, so that they too can join him in achieving their dream in constituency 101. “I alone cannot achieve this if the people fail to join me. If even I fail I will deliver what I have as I don’t have money, but knowledge and leadership quality that most people lack,” said Al Kanu.
