The Commissioner-General of the NRA and the Acting Commissioner, Income Tax Department addressed heads of government and private sector on tax related issues at the Kimbima Hotel conference hall on 14th July 2009.
They also discussed the level of compliance needed to enhance a formidable income generation drive.
In his statement, the Commissioner General Alieu Sesay pointed out that a good number of organizations are not operating in consonance with the NRA‘s set criteria for withholding tax.
He stated that at a recent meeting in Washington, Sierra Leone was rated as one the most deplorable society in terms of tax collection and compliance all over the globe owing to demeaning range of 12% recorded as the highest so far.
This miasma has resulted to many inconsistencies in revenue generation which is detrimental to government he added.
The chairman of the meeting the Acting Commissioner Income Tax Department Ibrahim Sorie Kamara mentioned that the NRA is mandated to ensure that government does not wholly rely on donors to solve its financial problems. As a result, withholding taxes, PAYE, corporate taxes together with filling annual accounts and returns are considered vital steps towards the economic development of Sierra Leone.
He further mentioned that NRA has the directive to award traveling ban, auction property, deduct from government subventions or at least institute court action in the event institutions fail to comply with the authority’s criteria. In a nutshell, he lamented, these sums collected are used for the general ‘well-being of the country and its citizens.
