The National Revenue Authority (NRA) has expressed dissatisfaction over the low payment of taxes in Kenema district and its environs. This was disclosed to the press by the Senior Collector Eastern Region Patrick William who says the people of Kenema city especially the business community are not paying their taxes as expected.
He cited instances of restaurants and shops owners. Patrick is attributing the non-compliance in tax payment by residents in this part of the country to high illiteracy level among taxpayers.
He disclosed that the National Revenue Authority (NRA) is trying in its educational drive to win over the business community in this region so that they can see reasons for paying taxes. The NRA tax collector revealed that with taxes communities are sure to develop and rely less on donor support.
He said those people who evade taxes are always classed as unpatriotic citizen and are not proud of their country. Mr. Williams called on all tax payers to pay their taxes regularly so that their shops will not be closed for breaching of the local tax Act and that development will be guaranteed in their localities.
