The National Public Procurement Authority yesterday hosted class six (6) pupils of Tower Hill Kindergarten School as part of the school’s activities.
Giving the purpose of the visit, Mr Alex Masuba, a teacher of the school, said that this is not the first time that the school embarked on such tour, as they have been going to various institutions to see their operations.
He said that after every National Primary School Exams (NPSE) they do take the kids to various locations so that they will learn about the operations of that particular institution.
“We are not limiting the children to only academic work but should teach them how the parastatals work.”
The teacher said that the number should have been more than this, but the other classes are on examinations and since the class six pupils have finished their exams, the school authorities decided to take them on educational tour.
“The reason why we took the pupils to the NPPA is because we are all neighbors and we do not know about the institution. The children wanted to know about the NPPA since they always see the notice board of the authority whenever they come to school and they will ask about the function of the NPPA.”
He went on to explain that such visit gives the children determination to work harder so that they will take over from those occupying the institutions they visited, adding that the school does not only cater for academic work, but also the whole human development of the children.
Dr. Adeyemi Suleiman, Acting Chief Executive of the NPPA, said he is proud to see pupils who are not only intelligent but well-mannered.
He said when he was growing up, he wanted to be an engineer so that he could help in road construction and build houses, “so I studied very hard to achieve my goal to help in the development process of my country”.
Mr. Suleiman said that children should have a role model so that they will aspire to be like that individual, but is now going the other way “because of the influence of movies as the children watch musicians that are not positive role models”.
“So we have to change that as they should look at the presidents, doctors, engineers and aspire for their positions. They should even look at institutions and think of heading those institutions or parastatals”
He urged the parents as they are the first teachers to contribute greatly to the development of the children.
“ I am also urging other schools to emulate this example of the Tower Hill Kindergarten school as it will help greatly towards the human development of the children.”
Dr Suleiman gave the background to the authority, its functions as provided for in the act, and also the various departments which are part of the authority.
The 31 pupils were taken on a conducted tour of the Authority after which the Head Girl of the School, Wilhemina Cole, moved the vote of thanks.
The NPPA Act 2004 and its regulations was donated to the school by the Authority.
