Fear gripped residents of Leicester and Gloucester communities over the weekend, with the overt display of an unidentified alleged thief entangled in an electrical cooper cable after allegedly been beaten to death by unidentified people as two other culprits reportedly narrowly escaped mob justice.
The presence of some police personnel seeking to identify the suspect who may have tortured the alleged thief to death, sent a wave of fear in people around the area for fear that they might be taken to task.
Officer Commanding Fourah Bay College Police Post, Peter Robert says, at about 3:45am last Sunday, he received an emergency call from one of his junior officers attached to his branch, informing him of the arrest of three cable thieves by residents of the Gloucester village, – but he advised him to either take them to the police post or to hand them over to the village head man for safe keeping till day break.
He said in a desperate move to handle the situation, his men materialised at the scene before day break to drag the thieves to police station, but they were dumb founded to learn that two of them had already escaped, leaving behind one who ran out of luck gasping for breath few minutes before his final demise.
Bakarr Kamara who alerted police to the scene confided in Awoko that at about
3: 45am that day, he woke up in a mysterious sound with indiscriminate shouting of thief! thief! When asked as to whether he came out to help capture the thieves, he declined noting that he was alone in the house and could not have afforded to confront a thief, but he however confirmed that he called one police constable ‘Konneh’ to inform him about suspected thieves in that community.
Before he delivered the remains of the alleged thief to police, the village Head Man of Gloucester William Kallon denied knowledge of the circumstances that led to the death of the unidentified man. He however confirmed that there has been persistent harassment of residents of that community by thieves who come to town. He added that over the past couple of months, he has made several arrests and handed over to police for further action but to no avail.
Some residents attributed the persistent occupation of thieves in that community to the non-availability of police post in their community, adding that the death of the alleged thief was a psychological warfare to scare other thieves away.
As investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of the alleged thief continues, his remains have been taken to the mortuary.
