The National Olympic Committee (NOC) yesterday donated sporting equipments to University Sports Club University of Sierra Leone at a colorful ceremony held at the NOC headquarters in Freetown.
The President of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) Henry Moore said that they made the donation after the University Sports Club made a request to them. As an executive they looked at the request and it was in place so they decided to make the donations.
He said before approving such donations they knew very well that the University Sports Club which comprises of constituent colleges, Fourah Bay College (FBC) Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM,) College of Medicine and Allied Health Services are Universities with integrity coming together to develop the University Sports club.
He went further that even though the donation is not a very large one but he appealed to them to use the items for the development of the club and he assured them that NOC will always be in the position to assist if the need arises.
The Secretary General of the Sports Club Francis B Musa in the request letter sent to NOC, mentioned that the University Sports Club is a recognized entity within the University of Sierra Leone and at the same time a major stake holder in sporting activities in the country.
He further disclosed that the University is really under equipped with sporting equipments and that sporting events are the only forum in which student unionism is solidified.
That is why they are going to use the sporting equipments donated to them for the intended purposes and such a gesture will also go a long way in grooming athletes not only for the University, but for the country as a whole.
The sporting items donated are 4 Footballs, 4 Volleyballs, 4 Basketballs, 2 pairs Basketball nets, 2 pairs Volleyball nets, 2 tins of Tennis Ball, 2 Rackets, one pair Tennis nets, 4 whistles, 1 Table Tennis set and 2 hand pumps.
