The District Medical Officer of the Koidu Government Hospital, Dr David A. Bome has expressed his dissatisfaction and frustration over the non availability of storage facility for blood in the District Hospital.
In an exclusive interview in his office at the Koidu Hospital Dr. Bome stated that the lack of storage facility for blood in the hospital is causing a lot of deaths among patients suffering from blood shortage in Kono.
The DMO further revealed that pregnant women and under five children are dying at an alarming rate in the district due to lack of blood to attend to emergency cases. Whenever an emergency case arises for blood, nurses, Doctors and relatives of the patient will be running up and down to search for someone with the suitable blood group that is needed by the patient. In the process of searching for people to give blood most patients end up losing their lives.
The appalling situation has even exacerbated with the alarming rate of teenage pregnancy within the District.
Meanwhile, Koidu Government Hospital is gradually improving in the area of infrastructure as the hospital has just opened a 1st class fifty bed room maternity complex worth Le1.5 billion.
For the very first time in the history of Kono District the Koidu Government Hospital has got a mortuary under the leadership of Dr. David Bome.
The District Medical Officer calls for the speedy intervention of Government and humanitarian Organizations to help save the lives of the people of Kono by providing a storage facility for blood in the District Hospital. “If there is a storage facility in the hospital, blood donors will be encouraged to donate blood that will be used in emergency situations”. the DMO explained.
