The Ministry of Health and Sanitation in collaboration with representatives of NGOs has ended a day’s working visit at Tiloma village in the Nongowa chiefdom in the Kenema district to sensitize the people of Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS).
The visiting team has officially declared the Tiloma community to be open defecation free out of the 21 pilot community projects in the Kenema district.
Speaking to the District Coordinator of Sanitation Mr. Olai Sankoh, he disclosed that the people of Tiloma village did the construction of the latrines without support from donors. He added that the construction of the latrines is to ensure the full implementation of the Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) programme.
Hr emphasized that the Tiloma community participated greatly in maintaining sanitation in their environment adding that sanitation is the best way to prevent people from getting into contact with certain diseases in the communities such as diarrhoea, typhoid, and cholera among others.
Mr. Sankoh also maintained that this declaration would be followed by a certification celebration for the people of Tiloma village for being an open defecation free station, adding that with all the implementation and sensitization by the Ministry of Health and Sanitation among the 21 pilot communities in the district Tiloma community is the only community for now that stands to be a free open defecation area in the district as they can now be proud of adequate toilet facilities. Mr. Sankoh called on his audience to make sanitation important, as it is a concern for everybody in our localities.
