The government of Sierra Leone is reported to have been running its monetary affairs from the beginning of the year to June 30th from taxes generated solely by the National Revenue Authority (NRA).
This was disclosed to the press by the NRA Commissioner General Alieu Sesay during a briefing at their Wellington Street office, in Freetown.
According to Alieu Sesay, “since the beginning of this year, up to June, we [govt] have been operating on what NRA has been generating…” Sesay said, adding that the government has been expecting support from the donor community but that, no donor support has come to the country.
Commissioner Sesay explained further that, since January on to June, the government was operating on what he referred to as “a cash budgetary system”.
However, Commissioner Sesay said, he was not under any political pressure from the government to do what they [government] want from the commission, since according to him, he was doing purely a technical job “and not a political job”.
The NRA Commissioner General said, his responsibility was to ensure revenue was generated for the government and that; all he was doing was in accordance with the provision of the laws of the country.
“I care for the people of Sierra Leone but if they don’t want me to collect the taxes, they should tell me, don’t collect the taxes.”
