In their first humble steps in the direction of touching lives of people, the National Nigerian Union (NNU) over the weekend presented 100 litres of cooking oil, several bags of rice, cash, and one cow to the St George’s Home for the Aged in Freetown.
Presenting the items, President of the Union Arc Abel T Onomake Director of IDEAS Limited said that the presentation was in line with the promises they made to engage in projects that will be of benefit to grassroots people.
He added that this is the first venture they have undertaken under the project, adding that funds generated for the project was from Nigerians living in the Kissy community.
Onomake reiterated that philanthropy is part of their Nigerian culture, stating that they will continue to do it in communities where there are Nigerians.
President Onomake noted that residents at the Home are their parents and it will be good for them to undertake such ventures that will improve on their living standards and well being.
He said that they had noted down constraints faced by the home, and promised that the Union will do anything they can to help them.
Speaking on behalf of the home, Madam Isha Johnston gave a brief overview why the Home was set up and how they are operating without help from government.
She stated that residents living in the Home appreciate the way they are treated and cared for.  Madam Johnston pointed out that the Home is run on charity, adding that without charity their mission will not be achieved.
She further highlighted some of the constraints the Home is facing ranging from medical facilities, government support and staffs that are under paid.
Secretary of the Union, Francis Onyekwue thanked the management for their work and assured them that they will always associate themselves with the Home.
Matron of the Home, Genevieve Coker stated the donation made by the Union was timely as there are only two bags of rice left at the Home to feed hundreds of people.
She said that the Home is really faced with constraints as they did not get support from the government.
A resident at the Home, Charles Dore in tears thanked the Union for the gestures they have made to the Home. He said that the donation was made at the right time.
Statements were also made by Presidents of different Nigerian Ethnic group.
