Marburg virus: Man who died in Guinea found to have disease
Guinea health officials have confirmed West Africa’s first case of Marburg, a highly infectious disease in the same family as the virus that causes Ebola. The World Health Organization (WHO) said the virus needed to be “stopped in its tracks”. Marburg virus disease is transmitted to people from fruit bats and spreads between humans through the transmission of bodily fluids.

AWC continues to save lives of women with obstetric fistula
In 2020, 260 women were screened for suspected obstetric fistula. Of these,129 had surgery to repair their fistula, with 31 of them receiving livelihood skills as part of their rehabilitation and reintegration. Since 2011 to date, Aberdeen Women’s Centre, with funding support from UNFPA, has successfully performed 1,731 fistula surgeries.
President Bio departs London for Turkey on private Visit
President Bio has departed London Tuesday morning for a private visit to Turkey where he is expected to spend two weeks. While in the Republic of Turkey, he is expected to hold private meetings with members of the private sector to explore investment opportunities in Sierra Leone for Turkish companies and investors.
Chief Minister engages MMMR & NMA
In continuation of his visit to MDAs, the Chief Minister, Jacob Jusu Saffa has engaged the Ministry of Mines (MMMR) and the National Mineral Agency (NMA) on key functions of the office of the Chief Minister. He stated that his meeting with them is to brief the mineral sector on his roles and responsibilities as Chief Minister.
ICC bidding to have the sport included in the Olympic Games
The International Cricket Council (ICC) says its primary target is being added to the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. It would end a 128-year wait for the sport to be included, following its only previous appearance in the 1900 Games in Paris. The sport will feature as a women’s event in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
