Some young vibrant sports journalists in the country have formed a new sporting association called the Sierra Leone Sports Journalists Association (SLSJA).
The reason this association was formed is because some of the members are concerned and want to seek the welfare of sports journalists in the country. According to them for the past years now the only sporting association that was in the country SWASAL who was supposed to seek their welfare was not functioning.
On these grounds the young journalists decided to come on board to seek their own welfare and presently the association can boast of over 30 journalists in both the print and the electronic media who are writing and talking sports presently in the country.
They also gave some of the reasons why they have formed the association which are to strive for opportunities for all sports journalists throughout Sierra Leone particularly young and upcoming ones. Also to uphold the ideas of sports Journalists, work for exemplary standards of professional practice as well as preserve and enhance the dignity and prestige of SLSJA members; and also to establish branches of SLSJA in other parts of the country and promote friendly relations and cooperation with international sports writers associations.
The association will also endeavour to solve some disputes between sporting associations for the smooth running of sports in the country.
Since the formation of the association they have held several meetings to forge the way forward for the association and one of Sierra Leone’s active sport journalist locally and internationally recognized Durosimi Thomas in one of the meetings advised the membership to stay focused and to have love for the job if they are to active their goal in the future.
Durosimi pledged to assist members of the association in getting free courses in many sporting displinces as his own way of assistance to the association.
In the first meeting the members were able to appoint a nine man interim executive that will work until election is held in March this year wherein a new executive will be formed that will steer the ship of the association for the next two years before another election will be held.
The interim executive is comprised of John Conteh as President, George Caulker as Vice President, Sahr Morris Jr Secretary General, Alhaji K Tarawally as Assistant Secretary General, Bernard Turay Financial Secetary, Pa Alie Sesay Social Secretary, Ibrahim Okon Koroma Organizing Secretary, Bockarie Alieu PRO(Print) and Sulaiman Storm Koroma PRO(Electronic)
