The people of Kaniya and Kavuyama in the Kailahun District can now cross a small river thanks to the construction of a Le47 million bridge. The bridge was commissioned on 25 December 2019. The women’s leader, Massah Aruna Augustine, during the bridge commissioning, thanked Elogima Sam Momoh for his support towards the construction. She said the bridge belongs to everyone and its protection is the responsibility of all. Elogima Sam Momoh said the Kaniya and Kavuyama communities are the same settlement but separated by a river. During rainy season the two settlements are separated unless they cut palm trees to use as temporary walkways. Momoh told the story of when his mother died and while returning her body to the village he was stuck at the river without a method to cross. Construction of the bridge started in 2013. Momoh thanked locals for providing some labour and local materials. The Paramount Chief of Yawei Chiefdom in Kailahun District, Francis Amara Korvaya Gbondo, said the bridge now links the Kavuyama settlement and its surrounding communities. He said this will help build unity and peace.
